Indirect Calorimetry
Measuring Resting Metabolic Rate

Indirect calorimetry measures resting energy expenditure (REE), also referred to as resting metabolic rate (RMR) by measuring oxygen uptake. Resting energy expenditure is the amount of energy a person burns in 24 hours when awake and at rest. For each calorie burned, a fixed amount of oxygen is consumed by the human body. Our traditional cart-style indirect calorimeter measures the amount of oxygen consumed over a short period of time and resting energy expenditure (REE) is calculated based on oxygen consumption. We use the ReeVue indirect calorimeter manufactured by Korr Medical Technologies, Inc.

How to Prep for your RMR Test

    • Food - Avoid eating beans, legumes and gas producing foods the day before testing.

    • Caffeine + Alcohol - Avoid consuming caffeine or alcohol 24 hours prior to testing.

    • Exercise - Avoid light exercise for 12 hours and intense exercise for 24 hours before the test.

    • Heat - Do not use a sauna or jacuzzi 12 hours before testing.

    • Liquids - Hydrate well. Your urine should be the color of straw or lemonade. If it is the color of apple juice you are dehydrated.

    • Illness - Please alert your clinician if you become ill and she will reschedule your test.

At the office, please use the restroom immediately before the test. We ask that you to sit quietly for 10-20 minutes before testing.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis - BIA

Measuring Body Composition

Bioelectrical impedance measures body composition by sending a low-level electrical current through the body. This current travels at a different rate through lean body mass, water and fat mass. The different travel rates are measured during the test and the resulting information is used to calculate lean body tissue and fat tissue. We use the InBody570 by InBody Company, Ltd.

HOW TO PREP FOR YOUR BIA TEST

BIA is affected by the amount and type of body water. For the most accurate results, please follow the guidelines below:
